HEMINGWAY AND BIMINI

Ernest Heminingway had a profound effect on Bimini, in many aspects. He brought world-wide attention to these rich fishing grounds as an adept deep-sea fisherman (he still holds some world records established there). In addition, he wrote and based some of his famous works there, including "The Old Man and the Sea". He wrote "Islands in the Stream", and "To Have and to Have Not" while staying at the Compleat Angler Hotel in Bimini.

Ernest also like to drink and fight. His boxing ability was real, and not imagined. He challenged anyone to last three rounds in the ring with him, and no-one ever took home the prize of $200. His boxing skills were sang about, in the song by local Bimini songster, Nat Saunders, in "Big Fat Slob". Apparently a rich dude named Dodi Knapp called Hemingway a "Big Fat Slob", and Ernest promptly put out his lights, in front of many people at the docks.

Hemingway and a shark-eaten marlin; remember the same fate of the big fish that the Old Man and the Sea brought in????
