CAT ISLAND BLUE HOLES

(With thanks to Curt Bannister)

Cat Island Bahamas Blue Holes are geological anomalies that are essentially deep limestone craters filled with beautiful blue water. The holes are part of an underwater cave system, linking freshwater lakes with the ocean.

The blue holes of Cat Island Bahamas are filled with legends and folklore. Many locals tell stories of sea monsters and mermaids inhabiting them. The "Bad Blue Hole" as locals call it is reputed to be the home of "Lusca".

"Lusca" is said to be half dragon/half octopus...capable of eating a horse in one bite! The legend varies somewhat about what the monster looks like, but island elders all agree that it exists.

Other Cat Island blue holes are said to be the home to manatee like creatures.

There are "diver friendly" blue holes on Cat Island too. However, most blue holes are protected. To find out more about blue hole diving, contact one of the local dive centers
